Jonny Clayton claimed his first ranking title of 2025 on Tuesday, cruising past Germany’s
Dominik Gruellich 8–2 in the final to win the 14th
Players Championship of the year. It wasn’t just a personal milestone for Clayton - it was a historic one for the sport. His victory marked the 500th Players Championship tournament since the series was launched in 2003.
Exactly 7,934 days after the inaugural event - where
Phil Taylor defeated
John Part in the final - the landmark edition took place on Tuesday in Rosmalen. The very first tournament was held in Blackpool.
One striking trend this season: across all 14 events so far, no player has managed to win on consecutive days - highlighting just how competitive the tour has become.
In contrast, Phil Taylor once dominated the circuit with four consecutive Players Championship wins - a feat he achieved twice, in 2008 and again in 2009.
Michael van Gerwen matched that streak in 2016.
Only four players have ever managed to win three consecutive titles: Taylor again, in both 2005 and 2006, alongside
Dave Chisnall (2012),
Robert Thornton (2014), and
Michael Smith (2022).
The Players Championship now takes a short break, with the action set to resume on Monday, May 12th in Hildesheim, Germany.
