Peter Wright has taken a big win in Wieze over
Michael van Gerwen, 6-4 on Saturday night in the second round of the
Belgian Darts Open.
It is now a fourth defeat in a row for Van Gerwen. He already suffered defeats against Luke Humphries (Premier League), Mensur Suljovic (UK Open) and Rob Cross (Premier League) in recent weeks.
The top form was also lacking against Wright. Van Gerwen even threw below the 90 average for part of the match, but eventually managed to raise it to 93.
Wright, who changed arrows several times throughout the match, managed to take a break lead thanks to a 72 finish in the sixth leg. Van Gerwen then came back to 4-4, but saw Wright then throw out 114. Van Gerwen had two more chances to force a final leg, but these chances were not taken. Wright then threw a 17-darter for a spot in the next round.
Gerwyn Price also reached the last sixteen at the Euro Tour tournament in Belgium. The former world champion triumphed 6-4 against Gabriel Clemens and also threw a very creditable average of 101.21.
