Petersen dumps out Van Gerwen after surviving brilliant fightback in second round of PDC Summer Series Day Five

The latest player to head out of the reckoning and as a result will not claim a hat-trick of PDC Summer Series titles is Michael van Gerwen.

Van Gerwen had won two out of four before today but was dumped out early on Saturday by Joe Murnan. He won through against Ryan Meikle in his opener today but was lucky to do so in surviving two match darts.

His next opponent was a player in Devon Petersen who has been really impressive in 2020 but has not got the results befitting of his form. He needs a title win today to make the World Matchplay and he has got a big win in his aspirations.

He raced into a 5-0 lead against the World Number One hitting 11, 12 and multiple 15 dart legs to do so. Despite that though, the air of inevitability is always there and Van Gerwen fought back to make it 5-5.

Van Gerwen missed a 104 checkout opportunity and both were locked on 20 for the match and it was 'The African Warrior' who struck first to see off the favourite for today's title.
