Eight names still have a chance to win the title at the European Darts Championship. Sunday afternoon the four quarter-finals are scheduled as four will try to reach the semifinals of the tournament in Dortmund.
Michael van Gerwen and Gian van Veen face each other in the last eight. Van Gerwen won from Madars Razma (6-5) and Ricardo Pietreczko (10-7) in his first two matches, while Van Veen was too strong for Damon Heta (6-1) and Daryl Gurney (10-6). It will be only the first meeting between the two compatriots. Van Gerwen is obviously the big favorite, but Van Veen has already shown he can surprise the big names this season with victories over Joe Cullen, Dave Chisnall, Nathan Aspinall and Jonny Clayton, among others. He now faces Gerwyn Price, an opponent of even greater stature. 'The Iceman' made it to the last eight after victories over Keane Barry (6-1) and Nathan Aspinall (10-5). The head-to-head is 11-3 comfortably in favor of the Welshman, who has not lost to Noppert since July 2020.
In the first quarterfinal, Peter Wright and Chris Dobey cross swords after Wright took out Gabriel Clemens (6-5) and Michael Smith (10-4) in succession. Dobey picked up wins against Dave Chisnall (6-2) and Stephen Bunting (10-8). The two men are almost no different in the balance between them. Wright won five of the nine encounters, although three of the last four duels were won by Dobey.
There is also another meeting between James Wade and Luke Humphries. Wade has had two easy matches against Dirk van Duijvenbode (6-3) and Jose de Sousa (10-1). Luke Humphries also has not been in trouble yet. He defeated Brendan Dolan (6-1) and Krzysztof Ratajski (10-5). The two Englishmen have already played 12 matches against each other, eight of which were won by Humphries. 'Cool Hand Luke' is already five duels unbeaten against Wade, who did manage to beat Humphries in the 2021 UK Open final.
