The Friday evening session continues to rumble on at the 2024
Flanders Darts Trophy, with both
Raymond van Barneveld and
James Wade qualifying for the second in Antwerp.
For the 57-year-old Dutchman triumphed 6-0 against Maik Kuivenhoven in the first round of the tournament in Antwerp. The five-time world champion played an excellent match with an average of 98 and a finish percentage of 37 percent. 'Barney' immediately gave a calling card by throwing a 12-darter in the first leg.
Van Barneveld then rushed to a 3-0 lead with a 76 finish and a 13-darter. A 130 check-out in the fourth leg then made it 4-0, before making it 5-0 via a 16-darter. Van Barneveld's average, which was at 104 after five legs, then dropped after a poor sixth leg. Both Dutchmen missed chances on the doubles before Van Barneveld took the match with a 24-darter.
Mike de Decker also advanced to the last 32 of the Euro Tour tournament in his home country. He did so at the expense of Richard Veenstra, who was defeated 6-2 in the first round. A key moment in the match was the third leg, in which De Decker threw an 80 finish to break his Dutch opponent. This was followed by a 78 checkout, giving the Belgian a 3-1 lead.
Then there were three breaks in a row, two of them in favor of Decker, who as a result led 5-2 after seven legs. 'The Real Deal' then decided the match with a 106 check-out.
Also through to round 2 is 'The Machine' James Wade. The Englishman trailed early against the in-form Cameron Menzies, but winning five of the last six legs, took a tight 6-4 win, averaging 96.38, with three 180s and a ton plus checkout in the process.
