Rodriguez seals comeback win over Kantele, Plaisier keeps European Championship hopes alive with Smith win

Rusty-Jake Rodriguez sealed a brilliant comeback as he defeated Marko Kantele to reach the second round at the Gibraltar Darts Trophy.

In the final match of the session, Rodriguez overturned a 5-4 deficit to seal it 6-5 finishing with a flourish hitting an 86 checkout on the bull to claim it and he will now play Rob Cross in the second round tomorrow.

While Wesley Plaisier will face Dave Chisnall with his hopes of reaching the European Championship still very much alive. The Dutchman who has been a standout through the Associate Member route still does not have his place in Dortmund secure.

But whitewashed Jeff Smith 6-0 to set up a tie with the last European Tour winner in Chisnall. He got off to an excellent start with a 111 checkout followed by two 14-darters.

He concluded the tie with a 90 and 66 checkout to send the Canadian packing who has not endured the best run in recent European Tour events with his Tour Card hopes fading.
