The
Austrian Darts Open continues with mixed fortunes for the big names on Saturday's evening session with
Callan Rydz dumping out Peter Wright in the main result.
The inconsistent form of the World Number One and World Champion continues to be apparent and rising Rydz took him out in a 6-3 victory.
This with a 96 average and 66% on the doubles defying a 100 average from Wright albeit with 27.3% on the doubles providing his downfall.
Similarly for Cameron Menzies, it was his doubling which proved to be his Achilles heel as
Michael van Gerwen returned the favour after being defeated on the ProTour recently by the Scot.
He went 3-0 up with a 104 checkout and seemed to be surging towards the final day before Menzies offered resistance including a 170 checkout to hold at 3-2.
But after missing the chance to break, Van Gerwen went 4-2 up and again it was a similar story when MVG went 5-3 up.
As Menzies could not take his chances leaving 25 for a break in case MVG missed 40 and when he spurned three darts, Menzies missed the big number on the 25 as well as the subsequent double four with his doubling percentage finishing down at 3/16.
While
Jonny Clayton made sure there would be no further damage to the seeded names for now as he saw off Jeffrey de Zwaan 6-4.
De Zwaan started his Austrian Darts Open campaign showing some of the resurgence he was given as of late seeing off Mensur Suljovic.
But it was 'The Ferret' who successfully won through denting the challenge of 'The Black Cobra' in the end.
