The 2021
European Championship Darts is set to come to a close this evening with a bumper session of action to decide who will be the champion in Salzburg.
One big name in particular remains in the running with
Michael van Gerwen of old looking ominous previously in situations like this.
He saw off one of his main threats to the title in Gerwyn Price in one of the best matches seen in the European Championship. Now his semi-final will see him face
Nathan Aspinall, another player he has a favourable record against.
But despite coming through the winners' circle in the Nordic Darts Masters, will the finishing line get to Van Gerwen in his pursuit of his first ranking major of the season.
Aspinall will hope it will. It has been a poor season for 'The Asp' but he is hitting his stride at the right time evidenced by a superb win over Danny Noppert who he called a player in the top four in the world currently.
On the evidence of recent weeks, it is hard to bet against the words of the former UK Open champion but he was the one to take him out and will hope his next notch is a formidable foe in Mighty Mike.
In the other semi-final, it is
Joe Cullen who spoke after his win over home hero Mensur Suljovic with thoughts he could win it. He and Jonny Clayton started the season as the form players in World darts with the latter going on to win the Premier League and World Grand Prix.
'The Rockstar' after a tumultuous time off and also at times on the oche this season will hope this is a catalyst to a first major potentially deserved given his form to start the year.
While
Rob Cross's mountain task continues in facing Cullen. Defending his winnings from two years ago when he became champion, he could fall out of the top 16 if he fails to reach at least the final.
It is typical of 'Voltage' to pick up a title seemingly from nowhere but with his form as of late being towards his best, can he find that spark to see off Cullen and go all the way?
The action begins at 7pm BST, 8pm local time with the format for the remainder of the tournament now best of 21 legs.
