Christmas is over and that means the World Darts Championship is finally moving on. Wednesday afternoon is the start of the third round. That also means the format goes up to best of 7 sets.
Another 32 players have a chance to win the world title. Today, Thursday and Friday the matches from the third round are scheduled. The fourth round will be played on Friday and Saturday, before we go into the new year with the eight remaining players.
We begin the afternoon session with a friendly between Scott Williams and Martin Schindler. Williams, winner of a Players Championship tournament in 2022, already managed to get through two matches. He first won 3-1 in sets over Haruki Muramatsu, before beating Danny Noppert 3-0. Against "The Freeze," Williams was especially strong with finishing. He now faces Martin Schindler, who defeated Jermaine Wattimena (3-1) in the second round. The German recorded an excellent average of 97. Both men can reach the last sixteen at the World Darts Championship for the first time. With Damon Heta and Berry van Peer as potential opponents in the next round, a quarterfinal spot may even be in the offing.
Gabriel Clemens ended Man Lok Leung's tournament in the previous round (3-1). With that, last season's World Cup semifinalist earned a clash with Dave Chisnall, semifinalist in 2021. It will be the sixth showdown between the Englishman and the German. Chisnall won the first four duels, but the last one was won 6-2 by Clemens.
Jeffrey de Graaf also returns to action Wednesday afternoon. After surprising victories over Ritchie Edhouse (3-2) and Jose de Sousa (3-1), an even better opponent awaits. Former world champion Rob Cross will take on De Graaf, who was born in the Netherlands but currently lives in Sweden and also performs on behalf of that country in Alexandra Palace;
Cross recorded a 3-0 victory over Thibault Tricole in the first round, but failed to impress with an average of 89. De Graaf did a lot better with averages of 93 and 94. De Graaf and Cross have faced each other twice in the past. These were both won by the Englishman.
