The fourth round heads towards its conclusion on Friday night at the 2023 UK Open and both Michael Smith and Jonny Clayton will be in the hat for tomorrow afternoon.
Smith saw off his close friend, Ian White who was making his first major appearance in a year after a ranking slide which saw him miss out on the World Championship for the first time and while there was positive signs today, 'Diamond' did not shine the brightest against 'Bully Boy'.
Alleviating recent wrist injury fears, Smith hit a 101 average, five 180's and three ton plus finishes back to back to win. Initially going 6-2 and 7-3 up, he added the finishing touch with a 124, 167, and 100 checkout to seal the win and send out a statement after reaching the final last year and losing out to Danny Noppert.
While Clayton who has been in some superb form lately saw off Ross Smith in a 10-9 win in what was a tough tie on paper and proved to be as 'The Ferret' went 9-6 up with a 106 checkout but watched as 'Smudger' came back to force a decider but he didn't survive match darts as he hit a 13-darter on double 20 for the win.
He is joined in the latter stages by Nathan Aspinall who produced a comeback as ever to see off Alan Soutar 10-9, Dirk van Duijvenbode who edged past Krzysztof Ratajski, Kim Huybrechts who prevailed in an all Belgian affair with Mike de Decker as well as Steve Beaton again rolling back the years including a 170 against Rowby-John Rodriguez.
