Smith after easing past Clayton into second round: "Mardle said I’d lose because I was rubbish in the Summer Series. I was like I’ll show him"

Michael Smith is into the second round of the World Matchplay after a brilliant win over Jonny Clayton which saw him punish lots of missed doubles from 'The Ferret'.

Smith said following the match that inspiration came from Wayne Mardle's pre tournament comments with the Sky Sports pundit/commentator who is not in Milton Keynes this week picking Bully Boy to head out of the tournament due to his form in the Summer Series.

“The way I started off I thought I was garbage. I knew my doubles were good but my scoring was never there," said Smith post-match to Online Darts.

“[Wayne] Mardle said I’d lose because I was rubbish in the Summer Series. I was like I’ll show him.”
