Wright after battling back to avoid scare against De Sousa: "I was playing myself, I wasn't even playing him"

Peter Wright battled back to survive an opening round scare against Jose de Sousa on the second night of World Matchplay action.

Wright was 8-5 down and took his glasses off which made all the difference against the Portuguese ace as he produced some of his best darts claiming the tie 10-8.

He said he took them off as he couldn't see the board and that before that, he was battling himself instead of his opponent.

“Jose is a brilliant player, but he didn’t play at the top of his game. I was playing myself, I wasn’t even playing him," said Wright post-match during an interview with Online Darts.

“At 8-5 I changed darts back to the floor tournament ones. I took my glasses off because I was fed up with the glare… I couldn’t see the board.”
