Smith on sealing first US Darts Masters held at Madison Square Garden: "Do you know how mad that sounds"

Michael Smith produced an exceptional late burst to surge past Michael van Gerwen and seal the US Darts Masters, the first to be held at Madison Square Garden.

For Smith, it sees him continue a rich vein of form and also become the first winner at the historic venue after an 8-4 win in the early hours of Sunday morning.

“Do you know how mad that sounds,” said Smith on winning the first darts event at Madison Square Garden. “I’m just a kid from St Helens watching rugby on TV now I’m in front of these fantastic people and I got the win, I’m over the moon.”

He was open after his first win over Doug Boehm about his nerves and admitted that went throughout the tournament.

“I was bricking it, even in the semi’s against Peter (Wright) I had a good second session and the same against Michael. I’m just on a rollercoaster at the minute, I’m playing decent and I’m getting lucky as well so long may it continue.”
