Australia’s defeat in the 2012
World Cup of Darts final remains a sore spot even years later. In a MODUS Super Series video on X,
Simon Whitlock and his son
Mason Whitlock were presented with the statement: it was
Paul Nicholson’s fault that Australia lost the World Cup of Darts. Both responded in their own way.
Mason Whitlock couldn’t fully agree with the statement, though he acknowledged that Nicholson was the first to have the chance to close out the match. "Oh my god. I didn't put strongly disagree because of the pressure he must have been under, especially having the first three match darts,” Mason explained.
He did point out, however, that Nicholson can’t be solely blamed for the defeat. His father, Simon Whitlock, also let chances slip to seal the title. "But of course, dad also missed three match darts. So I can't go, I have to disagree."
Simon Whitlock himself was far more direct in his verdict. The former World Cup finalist and then partner of “The Asset” admitted with a smile that he actually agreed with the statement, simply because Nicholson had the first opportunity to finish the match.
"I'm just agreeing because he had first shot and he missed. So I didn't expect to get another shot and I probably shouldn't have got another shot, but yeah, sorry Paul."
Even so, Whitlock had to concede that he then also missed three match darts of his own. That tempered his comment somewhat, although a playful jab at his former partner was inevitable. “But yeah… sorry Paul.”
