Niko Springer reached the last 16 of the
International Darts Open on Saturday. He defeated Dimitri Van den Bergh with 6-1 and showed just how much potential the young German has.
With this victory, he is in the last 16 on the PDC European Tour for the second time in his career. Springer also qualified for the International Darts Open in 2022. At the time, he beat Jermaine Wattimena and Brendan Dolan before falling to Peter Wright in the last 16.
"I had good memories of that (his performance last year, ed.). Just like last year, this year is the anniversary of my grandmother's death. And that is why I just told Dimi that I am playing for my grandmother today. I hope she's okay. I did my best," Springer said in the interview afterwards.
Although the German had played in the afternoon session, there were about 4000 spectators in the room. "I absolutely enjoy playing here in such a packed house. But I also know that my training (to become a lawyer) is an absolute priority. I just take what I can and I am certainly happy with the super support."
Springer faces Damon Heta in the next round. The German is relaxed about it. "Every game is a lot of experience. I know I can play. But I also know that Damon is a very good player. I'm looking forward to it. Just play and see what happens."
