Stefan Bellmont makes history as first ever Swiss qualifier for PDC World Darts Championship

The qualifying tournament for the PDC World Darts Championship in Kalkar is over with Stefan Bellmont taking a history-making victory. Jimmy van Schie seemed to be running away with Ally Pally qualification, but the Dutchman squandered a big margin, meaning Bellmont becomes the first ever Swiss participant at Alexandra Palace.

Van Schie played a rock-solid tournament and made it to the final match by beating Fabian Herz (6-4), Jan Zagel (6-2), Owen Roelofs (6-3), Stefan Dees (6-1), Jody Tobback (6-1) and Maik Kuivenhoven (6-5). Bellmont also impressed. He dealt with Moreno Blom (6-5), Patrick Link (6-0), Bert de Lange (6-2), Timothy Verbrugghe (6-2), Jurjen van der Velde (6-3) and Berry van Peer (6-1).

In the final, Van Schie gained a 2-0 lead by throwing out 76 and 108 in the first two legs. He then missed five chances to take a 3-0 lead. Via an 18-darter Bellmont halved the deficit to 2-1.

Through a 90 finish, 12-darter and a 13-darter, Van Schie took control and a 5-2 lead. Then came an important eighth leg, in which Van Schie missed three darts at a double to make it 6-2. In hindsight these were very expensive misses. Bellmont took the next three legs in a row, levelling up the scores at 5-5 after ten legs.

Things seemed to work out for Van Schie after all when he produced a 12-darter for a 6-5 lead. He then got to start the 12th leg himself, but missed two match darts. Bellmont took advantage with a 56 finish and then started the decider. Van Schie left 58 after four visits thanks to a 180 score, but thanks to a 124 finish the World Championship spot went to the Swiss.
