Mickey Mansell surprisingly qualified for the
Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton on Friday night. After a nerve-wracking match, he outlasted Cameron Menzies 16-15 after a decisive leg.
This victory already secured Mansell 50,000 pounds in prize money at this tournament. A huge amount for "Clonoe Cyclone." who in the past never earned more than 15,000 pounds at a tournament.
The money is not inconvenient for the Northern Irishman, who indicated after his match against Menzies that he has had to change his work schedule considerably. In recent years, Mansell has had a lot less time for his job.
“I work during the week, I’m a joiner. Barry [Hearn] threw a spanner in the works moving everything into the middle of the week,” Mansell told
SportsBoom.com“I used to work in the week, but now I’m trying to cover the costs when I have to play in the week. There was an income always coming in, when I could always work in the week, but now on those Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, if I don’t win, there’s no income. I’m playing to try and cover what I’m missing out on,” he continued.
On Sunday afternoon, Mansell will play Martin Lukeman in the semifinals of the Grand Slam of Darts. Should Mansell win that match, his earnings this week rise to 70,000. The winner of the Grand Slam of Darts will collect the top prize of 150,000 pounds.
