Stephen Bunting has set up an intriguing quarter-final tie with Stowe Buntz at the 2023
Grand Slam of Darts following a 10-4 victory over
Danny Noppert in the last 16 in Wolverhampton.
After Bunting had held throw in the opening leg, both had chances in leg 2 before Noppert eventually held throw himself to level up at two apiece. With seemingly having trouble settling, Bunting needed to take advantage and he did in leg 4, eventually breaking after both had missed a handful at double. After pinning double 10 in the last leg before the break, Bunting headed off stage a 4-1 leader.
On his return, the break had seemingly done nothing to stem the Bunting momentum and the former Lakeside champion fired in seven perfect darts. When he failed to get the nine-darter though, Noppert responded with a brilliant 136 to hold throw in style, marking the moment with a big reaction. Missing multiple darts to break in the following leg however, Noppert was unable to capitalise on properly. An 18-dart break then saw Bunting move 6-2 clear. With the pair sharing the two remaining legs of the session, it was 7-3 to Bunting at the break.
More missed doubles in the first leg back, but it was again Bunting who eventually took it to move just two legs from a rematch with Stowe Buntz in the quarter-finals. Despite yet more misses, Noppert would be allowed to return and take leg 12, although it would have hardly filled him with confidence. When Bunting moved one leg away courtesy of double top and then kicked off the following leg with a sixth maximum, the writing looked on the wall for Noppert. Moments later, Bunting finished with a flourish, nailing the bullseye for a 121 checkout and a 10-4 victory.
