While they won't play together at the World Cup of Darts, Peter Wright will face off with Gary Anderson tomorrow afternoon at the Nordic Darts Masters after a sublime display to reach the Quarter-Finals.
It was duly noted in commentary that Wright had only flown to Copenhagen on Thursday after spending extra time out in New York to recharge but jet lag was not an issue as 'Snakebite' flew through the gears to whitewash the first ever Icelandic player in a TV tournament, Matthias Örn Friôriksson.
He produced a 103 average, four 180's and 55% on the doubles and Anderson now awaits.
A 180 and double seven saw Wright hold to begin the tie. A second maximum saw ‘Snakebite’ en route to doubling his lead with a break of throw.
A 75 checkout saw Wright continue to go through the motions and into a 3-0 lead. Another 180 and 100 checkout another break and he was two away with a 105 average.
With a fourth 180, this average went up towards 109. From 160, he left double 10 and pinned it to go one away. Wright nearly finished with a flourish in a 152 checkout but still sealed the deal in a whitewash win.
While in one of his final tournaments before surgery for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in his arm, Michael van Gerwen will aim to go out with a bang in the defence of his Nordic Darts Masters crown.
For a second week running, James Wade awaits after he cruised past Marko Kantele with a 97 average and a high checkout of 1`57 with a dominant mid match spell of finishing.
Van Gerwen surged into a 2-0 lead averaging just over 100. Kantele had three darts at double 18 to hold and despite fluffing his lines, an 81 checkout missed from MVG allowed the Finn three more darts and he made it 2-1.
MVG held on double 20 and a 157 checkout saw MVG on his way to a 4-1 lead. He followed that up with a 103 checkout to go one away.
He missed 124 on the bull for the match but returned for a 25 checkout to seal it after Kantele missed 68 for a hold.
