The match in the semifinals of the 2017 PDC World Darts Championship between Michael van Gerwen and Raymond van Barneveld is in the history books as the potentially the best World Championship match ever, possibly even the best darts match of all time. Van Gerwen recorded an average of 114.05, while Van Barneveld averaged 109.34. Barney's average is the highest losing average ever at this tournament. Together, the two Dutchmen combined with an average of 223.39.

Van Gerwen is also involved in the match with the second highest combined match average at Alexandra Palace. In the 2017 World Darts Championship final, he threw a 107.79 average, compared to 104.93 for losing finalist Gary Anderson. The combined average then came to 212.72.
That was narrowly higher than that of the 2009 World Darts Championship final, when it ended at an average of 212.12. Phil Taylor then produced an average of 110.94, while Van Barneveld threw 101.18 average at the time. The fourth highest combined match average is credited to Van Gerwen (105.24) and Cristo Reyes (106.07). The Dutchman and the Spaniard threw a combined average of 211.31. Rounding out the top five are Taylor (109.00) and Mick McGowan (101.82) with 210.82.
