Starting tomorrow, the battle erupts at the World Matchplay at the Winter Garden, Blackpool. Since the first edition in 1994, we have seen countless top darters shine on the stage. But which players have the most wins to their name in this prestigious tournament?
It probably won't surprise anyone that this list is headed by none other than Phil Taylor. 'The Power' managed to win a whopping 99 matches in total at the Matchplay. And to think he managed to achieve that bizarre number in 107 matches. That's a winning percentage of over 92 percent! Not surprisingly, the Briton has won the tournament 16 times, which is by far the record.
Behind Taylor, in second place with significantly fewer wins, we find James Wade. The 41-year-old Briton has won a total of 40 times in 57 matches played, which is still a respectable average. It is noteworthy that 'The Machine' was particularly successful at the World Matchplay between 2006 and 2014, with two tournament wins and another final. Since then, however, Wade has never advanced beyond the second round, which is still disappointing considering his qualities.
Michael van Gerwen is in third place with 33 wins in 45 matches played. 'MVG' reached at least the semifinals no less than six times in 12 participations between 2012 and 2023. Three times he actually managed to win the tournament, most recently in 2022. Remarkably, Van Gerwen is the only name in this list that is not from the United Kingdom.
Furthermore, there are six darters who have more than 20 wins at the World Matchplay. Adrian Lewis has won 29 of his 46 matches played. He reached the final once, which he lost to Phil Taylor. Ronnie Baxter recorded 28 wins in 45 matches, while Dennis Priestley won 27 matches out of 44 played. Peter Wright had 24 wins in 36 matches, Gary Anderson won 23 of his 37 matches, and Rod Harrington has 22 wins to his name.
Alan Warriner-Little is in penultimate place with 19 wins. Peter Manley closes out the list with 18 wins. However, with rising young stars such as Luke Humphries and Luke Littler stringing together victories, it is possible that we will see new names appear in this list in the coming years.
