Next to the PDC World Championship, the World Matchplay is perhaps known as the biggest tournament players look forward to on the calendar. Here, the best players in the world compete for the coveted Phil Taylor Trophy.
Matthew Edgar, who was active with the PDC between 2011 and 2022 but never managed to qualify for the World Matchplay, stressed how important this tournament is and looked ahead to the upcoming edition in an interview with OLBG.com.
All the best players of the moment are present, making every match a joy to watch. This is therefore one of the reasons why the Englishman is such a fan of the Matchplay. "It's the best players over the last two years taking on the best players of the last year. It's the top 16 against the most in-form players battling for £800,000 worth of prize money," said Edgar to OLBG.
"It's the best event on the calendar for me. I love it and so do all the players. For the players this is the biggest thing outside of the World Championship. Not just because of the prize money but the structure of the event as well."
Since the first edition in 1994, the World Matchplay has been held at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool, which Edgar says is one of the reasons why not only players but also fans love the tournament. "It's a season changer, it's a career changer. Everyone loves it from the players to the fans. Getting a ticket for this event is near on impossible. It's sold out in minutes. As it does every year. It's probably an event that has outgrown the Winter Gardens now. It was just so iconic with the Winter Gardens since 1994, this event is being played at Blackpool and it's one that everyone's looking forward to."
