The PDC's house statistician has examined an unusual statistic ahead of the PDC World Darts Championship. Christopher Kempf, nicknamed Ochepedia, examined how strong players are at playing decisive legs in a set.
A set system is used at the World Darts Championship. A set (with the exception of the last set from the second round) consists of a maximum of five legs. Three legs must be won to take the set. Statistics show that Michael van Gerwen performs particularly well in the all-important fifth legs.

Van Gerwen has had to play a deciding leg of a set 157 times over the years at the World Darts Championship. Impressively, the Dutchman has won 98 of those. Especially in the past two editions, 'Mighty Mike' has been particularly good at leg-deciders. In this period he won twelve of the fifteen decisive legs in a set.
Other players scoring well in decisive legs are Rob Cross and Kim Huybrechts. Former world champion Cross has won 32 of 48 fifth legs at the World Championships. At the 2018 World Darts Championship, when Cross won the tournament, he took 11 of 15 decisive legs. Moreover, over his 48 fifth legs, "Voltage" has an average of over one hundred (100.36).
Kim Huybrechts will take part in this year's World Darts Championship for the fourteenth time in a row. 'The Hurricane' made it to the quarterfinals on his debut in 2012, but never made it to the last eight after that. However, the Belgian has an impressive winning percentage of 68.3% in decisive legs, the highest percentage of all active players who have participated in at least 10 World Championships.
One player who, on the contrary, did not perform well in fifth legs at the World Darts Championship is Daryl Gurney. 'Superchin' had to play a fifth leg 56 times but won only 36 percent of those legs, a pretty low percentage for a two-time major winner. Moreover, the last time Gurney won a fifth leg at the World Darts Championship was during the 2021 edition.
