The level of the sub-top in darts has increased considerably in recent years, but contrary to what you might expect, the number of 100+ averages at the World Darts Championship has actually decreased.

Statistics platform Darts Orakel has made an overview with the number of 100+ averages per year at the World Darts Championship. In the first two World Cup editions (1994 and 1995) no 100+ averages were thrown, this only succeeded for the first time in the 1996 edition.

At least one 100+ average was then produced up to and including the 2007 edition. This failed in 2008, then suddenly ten were thrown a year later. A new high came at the 2010 World Darts Championship with fifteen 100+ averages.

A new record came in 2015, with 19. The 2017 edition of the World Darts Championship then went into the history books. During that year, no less than 26 100+ averages were thrown. That was also the edition in which Michael van Gerwen managed to break the magic barrier in all of his six matches. In the semifinal, Van Gerwen even recorded a moyenne of 114.05, which is still the highest average ever at the World Darts Championship.

In 2018, the record was almost matched. In the year Rob Cross surprisingly became world champion, the score ended at 25 100+ averages. That number was not reached in subsequent years, with the low point being 11 100+ averages at the 2020 World Darts Championship. During the last edition of the World Darts Championship, 22 100+ averages were eventually thrown.

It's only a matter of time before the record from 2017 goes, especially since the field of participants will be expanded to 128 players starting next year. So that also means more matches at the World Darts Championship and therefore more attempts to throw a 100+ average.
