Jermaine Wattimena left the
Belgian Darts Open with visible displeasure. The Dutchman could not maintain a strong start against Stephen Bunting and eventually lost 6-3, after six consecutive lost legs. Afterwards, Wattimena expressed his frustration towards his opponent with a warning finger.
The 36-year-old Dutchman started the match convincingly and took a comfortable 3-0 lead. Then the match turned completely in Bunting's favor, who did not surrender a single leg and won the match six in a row.
Wattimena was visibly struggling to cope with the defeat. It took some time before he gave Bunting a hand, and he seemed to address his opponent briefly, pointing at him. Bunting himself seemed oblivious.
"I have known Jermaine for a long time and have tremendous respect for him. For me, this was a normal match. I'll talk to him backstage later," the Englishman responded after the match on stage. "I am not a player who tries to provoke his opponent."
According to Viaplay commentator Jacques Nieuwlaat, Bunting's pace of play may have played a role in Wattimena's frustration. "It's not very sporting that he waits so long before giving a hand. He still seems to be saying something and I suspect it has to do with Bunting's pace. Ugh, bad loser, Wattimena," Nieuwlaat said.
