UK Open Qualifying 1 results, final: Michael van Gerwen wins first ProTour of 2018 in Wigan

Michael van Gerwen is now 12 matches unbeaten despite his World Championship heartbreak at the end of last year. He has done so in style defeating Michael Smith in the final of the first ProTour event in Wigan of the year.
Smith didn't play badly on the first UK Open Qualifier and got back into it towards the end after losing the first few legs against 'Mighty Mike'. But it was too big of a mountain to climb with Van Gerwen winning the first ProTour title with a 170 checkout with Smith waiting to go within 1 leg.

- Maybe the supposed top players are burnt out from the endless travelling and tournaments, I just don't think they have the dedication or outright desire to win. I think they are more interested in the money and being popular, just keeping their rankings steady. The only thing that mattered to Phil Taylor was winning, not winning a few games to top up the money pot and seeking the fans attention. Maybe there is too many tournaments now and the enthusiasm is gone. This year especially has seen so many different winners and unexpected draws and line ups.richieburnettrocks14-11-2024
