For only the second time, Gerwyn Price has been defeated at Aldersley Leisure Village with 'The Iceman' who has been somewhat unbeatable in recent years at the
Grand Slam of Darts losing out to the 2012 champion
Raymond van Barneveld.
Van Barneveld sealed victory yesterday in a scrappy affair against Dave Chisnall but today the doyen of Dutch darts produced a 100 average in a 5-4 win moving into the Last 16 joining his compatriot Dirk van Duijvenbode in doing so.
To start the tie, Price threatened to run away with it taking a break of throw and went onto lead 3-1 but thanks to an 11-darter and a 96 checkout, the revival started. Price broke again but Van Barneveld forced a decider. In that he had the throw and timed it to perfection with a superb 67 checkout defying a 106 average in the process.
In Group C,
Michael Smith has one foot in the Last 16. He eased past Joe Cullen 5-1. Albeit he is not yet guaranteed of a spot in the Last 16, he will need at least two legs in his next game against Ritchie Edhouse to seal that.
