Dirk van Duijvenbode has advanced to the third round of the
European Darts Matchplay in Trier. He beat reigning UK Open champion Andrew Gilding in the last 32.
Van Duijvenbode got off to a flying start with scores of 140 and 180 and took the first leg with an 11-darter. The second leg went to Gilding, but then it was 'Aubergenius' who strung together three legs with a 124 finish, 15-darter and an 18-darter.
Gilding trimmed some of the deficit by notching a 14-darter for 4-2, but then failed to finish.
With two excellent legs, a 14-darter and a 15-darter, Van Duijvenbode decided the match 6-2. The average exceeded 100.67, while he also posted a creditable finishing percentage of 50 percent.
Nathan Aspinall recorded a hard-fought victory over Martin Lukeman. Halfway through the match, 'The Asp' was still facing a 4-1 deficit.
With three 12 darts in a row, Aspinall quickly came back to 4-4. Lukeman then reached match point by throwing out 90, but just could not cash his matchdart in the tenth leg. It was Aspinall who forced a deciding leg with double 4.
Lukeman was allowed to start the last leg, but succumbed to the pressure with very poor scores of 28 and 23. Aspinall showed he was cut from the right cloth and took the match 6-5.
