Van Gerwen battles back to down debutant Heta in World Matchplay first round

Michael van Gerwen is through to the second round of the World Matchplay where Ian White will await after downing debutant Damon Heta in a 10-7 victory.

Van Gerwen turned on the afterburners after the return from the interval to come from 6-4 down to win through and see off the Aussie who looked potentially set for a shock win.

Van Gerwen to begin the tie had the better of the opening exchanges with a 3-2 lead over Heta but 'The Heat' was there to capitalise and hit the front at 5-4 up from there.

At the interval, he hit four legs on the spin with an 84 checkout to go 6-4 up but the break came at the wrong time for the Australian.

Van Gerwen returned to stop the rot with an 84 checkout for an 11-darter at 6-5 before drawling level at 6-6 with the same checkout.

Three darts were squandered at tops from there and Van Gerwen stretched his lead to 8-6.

MVG went one away from there and while Heta could prolong the match, it wasn't for long as Van Gerwen claimed victory.
