Michael van Gerwen recovered from a set down to see off Chas Barstow in his opening tie at the 2021/22 PDC World Darts Championship.
Van Gerwen wasn't pleased with his display but was glad to be through to after Christmas.
"How you win doesn't really matter but you want to give yourself a little bit more confidence. I missed too many doubles especially in the first set but after I was able to get my focus going, he didn't really take advantage after the first set because his scoring was quite poorly afterwards," said Van Gerwen post match.
"It wasn't brilliant, it wasn't what I wanted. Of course you want to start the tournament off with a nice 104 average and smash someone away but I didn't do that."
Prioritising darts over Christmas
But for Van Gerwen, he won't be spending Christmas with his family as a result of the Netherlands lockdown and made the decision as a result of the announcement.
"I'm going to stay in the UK, I've decided to be fair last moment call with my wife and MODUS, she said don't worry just stay there, don't put yourself in unnecessary problems and do your own thing and that's exactly what I'm going to do."
Price comments
Gerwyn Price previously said that he is going to play Michael van Gerwen in the final and that in doing so he will defeat the second best player which MVG replied to.
"He's got one thing right and that's playing me in the final but other thing is absolute nonsense. We all know he's full of himself but deep in his heart, he knows if I play my game they're all dependent on me and they're not even allowed to stand in my shadow."
