Van Gerwen hit three 180's, five 100+ finishes, a 99.33 average and 11/19 on finishing doubles as he continued his unbeaten record over Dobey. He will now face Peter Wright in the semi-finals in a top class showdown.
Dobey went 2-0 down but brought it back albeit through missing multiple darts to hold to 2-2. But a 180 and double 20 saw MVG seal the set.
Van Gerwen missed 157 on double 20 and Dobey pinned double six to go 2-0 up but the Dutchman responded in kind with a 124 to get it back on throw.
A 76 checkout saw MVG send it to a decider. A 122 checkout saw Dobey steal the set. ‘Hollywood’ levelled at 1-1 with MVG’s average heading towards 100 in a superb spell which featured a 118 checkout to go 2-1 up and towards a 2-0 sets lead.
A 109 checkout saw MVG go 2-1 up in sets. Van Gerwen messed around on doubles and Dobey held on double five. Dobey busted 100 on double 15 but Van Gerwen could not pick his pocket on 108.
‘Hollywood’ couldn’t get a shot at 100 this time and MVG broke to go one away. He pinned a 105 checkout using two double 20’s to seal it.
