Michael van Gerwen and
Luke Humphries can be admired at the Grand Slam of Darts starting this weekend, but last Thursday the two world class players already met.
The Dutchman and the Englishman were booked for an exhibition match in Blackpool, the city where the annual World Matchplay is held. After some legs against each other, Van Gerwen and Humphries took on each other.
A format of best of 15 legs was played. Van Gerwen proved to be in the best shape, as 'Mighty Mike' won 8-5. The 35-year-old recorded an average of 95.60 and threw four 180-scores among other things. Humphries, despite his defeat, threw five 180-scores and had an average of 96.96.
The duel between Van Gerwen and Humphries was not the only match played in Blackpool. The audience in attendance was also treated to a friendly between local heroes Wes Newton and Ronnie Baxter. Both darters hail from Blackpool and have competed regularly at the World Matchplay in the past.
The showdown between the two Englishmen proved to be an easy prey for Newton. 'The Warrior' was 3-0 too strong for his compatriot in a match over best of 5 legs.
