Van Gerwen defuses comeback Aspinall to reach European Championship final

Michael van Gerwen has made it through to the final of the European Championship at the expense of Nathan Aspinall, as he faces Joe Cullen or Rob Cross later in the evening.

Van Gerwen seemed to waste very little energy on his way to the final. Thanks to a 10-darter, 13-darter and two 14-darters, the Dutchman had a 7-1 lead after eight legs.

Mighty Mike then missed doubles in two legs in a row to extend the lead as he helped Aspinall to come back to 7-3 at the second break. Then The Asp even got back to 7-6 and missed two chances to equalise.

Van Gerwen made it 8-6 with a 90 finish, but Aspinall leveled the match in the 18th leg with a stunning 90 checkout for 9-9.

Both players then held their own leg, forcing a deciding leg. Van Gerwen had the throw in that leg and after nine darts he was already on 41. He threw out that finish in two darts to secure his place in the final.
