Van Gerwen demolishes Humphries, Cross ends De Zwaan's run at UK Open

Michael van Gerwen put his name in the hat for the quarter-finals at the UK Open after a convincing victory over Luke Humphries on Saturday evening.

The Dutchman already broke Humphries in the second leg and then took out 170 to lead 3-0. Finishes of 56, 93 and 112 helped Van Gerwen to extend the lead to 6-1, before Humphries hit a 16-darter for 6-2. 'Cool Hand Luke' also made 6-3, before missing three darts at the double to go into the interval with a 6-4 deficit. Van Gerwen didn't fail at the doubles at hit double 10 for 7-3.

After the break, Van Gerwen made a quick end to the game. He held his own legs with 13- and 11-darters, before hitting a 13-darter to win 10-4.

Rob Cross avoided another upset on stage 2 as he defeated Jeffrey de Zwaan, who beat Gerwyn Price earlier on the day. De Zwaan had a 4-2 lead against Cross, but ran out of steam and the match slipped out of his hands as the game continued. Cross put a 10-7 result on the scoreboard.
