Michael van Gerwen has qualified for the last four of the fifth week in the
Premier League Darts with a 6-5 victory over
James Wade.
The Dutchman was broken in the third leg after a 15-darter by Wade, but broke back immediately. Van Gerwen eventually took a 5-4 lead and could have decided the game in the tenth leg. However, Mighty Mike missed seven match darts and Wade made it 5-5. In the deciding leg Van Gerwen claimed the win with a 56 finish.
Van Gerwen now takes on Joe Cullen, who was automatically admitted to the last four after Gerwyn Price's withdrawal. The other semi-final is between Michael Smith and Jonny Clayton.
New format
The eight participants play sixteen times a tournament. The format is such that a player meets the other participants twice in a quarterfinal. During two weeks of play, in the eighth and sixteenth week, the draw is made on the basis of the points.
Points can be scored with results in the sixteen tournaments. A semi-final earns two points, a second place three points and a tournament win five points and a Β£10,000 bonus.
Based on these points the new Premier League Darts ranking is formed. The four best players advance to the Premier League Darts play-offs.
