Peter Wright failed to win his first match as world number one. Snakebite lost to
Jonny Clayton in Brighton during the fifth week of the
Premier League Darts.
Wright has been the new number one of the world since last weekend, after Gerwyn Price failed to reach the final at the UK Open. Thursday night the Scot faced another Welshman, who beat him 6-5. Wright started the deciding leg, but was not out within five turns. Clayton punished him as he took out 121 by hitting the bullseye with his third dart.
Michael Smith is Clayton's opponent in the last four. Smith beat
Gary Anderson 6-1. Michael van Gerwen and James Wade will determine who will face Joe Cullen in the second semi-final. Cullen was automatically through, after Price had to pull out due to a hand injury.
New format
The eight participants play sixteen times a tournament. The format is such that a player meets the other participants twice in a quarterfinal. During two weeks of play, in the eighth and sixteenth week, the draw is made on the basis of the points.
Points can be scored with results in the sixteen tournaments. A semi-final earns two points, a second place three points and a tournament win five points and a £10,000 bonus.
Based on these points the new Premier League Darts ranking is formed. The four best players advance to the Premier League Darts play-offs.
