Van Gerwen extends World Series record further; as many titles as three darts legends combined

Michael van Gerwen captured the title at the US Darts Masters last weekend in the legendary sporting arena, Madison Square Gardens in New York.

During the final day of the World Series tournament, he successively defeated Jim Long (6-2), Rob Cross (7-6) and surprise finalist Jeff Smith (8-0). It won him the top prize of ยฃ20,000. Moreover, it was already his eighteenth World Series title, which puts him above the rest once again.

It was the 53rd World Series of Darts tournament in the history of the PDC, which means that Van Gerwen has won almost one third of all the events held.

The Dutchman is a block ahead of the other darts players on the honors list of the World Series tournaments. Van Gerwen has even won as many as the numbers two, three and four on the list combined, and those are not the least names.

Number two on the list is none other than 16-time world champion Phil Taylor, who was successful in a World Series tournament eight times in his career. This is followed by former world champions Gary Anderson (six titles) and Peter Wright (four titles).

In all, fifteen players have won at least one World Series tournament. Michael Smith and Gerwyn Price each won three, while Dimitri van den Bergh and Jonny Clayton are both currently on two overall victories.

Rob Cross, James Wade, Adrian Lewis, Damon Heta, Kyle Anderson, Mensur Suljovic and Mensur Suljovic all won one World Series tournament in the past. Incidentally, Raymond van Barneveld reached the final of a World Series tournament five times, but lost them all.
