Van Gerwen fends off tough test from Clayton, Humphries wins epic tie against Wattimena

The action is heading towards its conclusion in the afternoon session on Day Two at the Players Championship Finals with Michael van Gerwen successfully through after fending off a tough test against Jonny Clayton.

Van Gerwen edged past Clayton in a 6-4 win with a 100.6 average and 50% on the doubles with an important break late on to make it 5-4 proving pivotal against 'The Ferret' as he keeps his title defence on track.

Jose de Sousa had a tougher ride as he continues his first tournament since his Grand Slam of Darts win as he survived two match darts against Vincent van der Voort to claim a spot in the Last 16.

Luke Humphries and Jermaine Wattimena on the other stage played out an absolute epic with both averaging 107 in a high quality fast paced contest which saw the Dutchman win through 6-4 with six 180's along the way.

Jeffrey de Zwaan also advanced with a 6-4 win over Wayne Jones averaging 100 with five 180's and 60% on the doubles. While Dirk van Duijvenbode stormed to a 6-1 win over fellow Dutchman, Niels Zonneveld in a very Dutch feel to the Last 16.
