For years Michael van Gerwen has travelled across the world due to darts without much time at home. Due to the corona crisis though, he has been at home for almost two months now.
"I don't get bored", Van Gerwen said in an interview with Darts News. “Of course I have a nice house and a nice garden. So I have enough work to do, that's not a problem. Normally you leave things to do, but I now have time for that. ”
However, the world number one cannot get used to this situation especially staying at home which he is very much not used to. "If you spend a lot of time at home, which I am not used to, you would like to start again. But it is no different. Anyone who is competitive will have this problem. It is just a matter of waiting.''
That does give Van Gerwen the opportunity to do an extra bit in the household. Although the three-time world champion says that he also regularly does odd jobs around the house.
“You automatically do more now. Whether I am also vacuuming? I do that anyway. I really don't care about that. I just help in the household at home. If you help each other it will be a lot easier.”
Darts in society with social distancing
Contrary to what
Martijn Kleermaker believes, Van Gerwen thinks that it is not possible to play Pro Tour tournaments in a society with social distancing at the moment.
"There are many things that make it very difficult. The markers and players walk past each other, or you have to wait for each other. When do I think we can play again? If I look at the neighbouring countries, I expect to return sometime in July, but we have to wait. For the rest, you cannot do much.''
