It was a sluggish start from both but Durrant took the opening leg with a 50 checkout on double 16.
Van Gerwen missed two darts at double 20 for a 60 checkout in the requisite leg but was let off the hook after Durrant missed double 20 for an 80 checkout and made it 1-1 as a result.
He claimed a break on double five to go 2-1 up and despite missing five darts at doubles, he landed the same target to make it 3-1 and move two clear.
MVG missed two darts at double for a 52 checkout before landing double eight to move three clear at 4-1 up. Durrant though wasn't done and clawed the gap back to 4-3 and suddenly looked to potentially trouble MVG.
But this was a mere consolation as a double 18 last dart and a 92 checkout saw him restore his lead to three legs and guarantee himself a point and he assured himself of both from there on.
