Michael van Gerwen will take to the stage at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry next week with a different complexion to a year ago.
Van Gerwen has by his own admission gone through a 'difficult patch' in terms of his game with exits at the Premier League and World Matchplay and inconsistent displays from the World Number One.
But he will hope to put that right when he aims for three in a row in the double start format and that is his aim while also being under no illusion in terms of the first round threat in Krzysztof Ratajski.
"Of course it could be better, my last few months have had too many ups and downs. You need to get past that, it's not always that easy but you have to fight hard and work hard," said Van Gerwen to title sponsors BoyleSports.
"It is a tournament that suits me but the first round is dangerous whoever you play. I can remember Phil Taylor lost to Adrian Gray, I've lost to the phenomenal John Henderson in the first round so you need to be really sharp against whoever you play in the first round because that's the most tricky one."
"I'm coming off a difficult patch but it doesn't matter, I've been in this position before and I know how it is to bounce back and to win this three times in a row will mean a lot to me."
In terms of the lack of crowds, Van Gerwen admits that there are more pressing issues but that it is a factor: "It affects me, I'm a player who likes to perform in front of crowds, it gets me buzzing, it gets me going but everyone's in the same position and there's bigger problems in the world than no crowd at darts."
