Michael van Gerwen has made an excellent start to the new Premier League season, but his appearance on Night 3 in Glasgow may be in doubt. The Dutch star is dealing with health issues, and his participation in the match against Luke Littler is uncertain.
That was confirmed by former professional Vincent van der Voort on the Darts Draait Door podcast. According to him, it is far from certain whether the three-time world champion will actually step up to the oche on Thursday. “Unfortunately, we still don’t know for sure if Michael will play,” Van der Voort said on the podcast. “He’s picked something up and is on antibiotics. I can’t say yet that he’ll be there. We’ll have to wait and see over the coming days. Tests are being done, and I hope they find it quickly so it can be resolved. There’s a chance he won’t be there.”
The possible absence comes at a time when Van Gerwen appeared to be back on the rise. He won the Premier League opening night and reached another final last week in Antwerp, where he lost to Gerwyn Price. As a result, he tops the table after two nights.
He also impressed on the ProTour. At the first two Players Championship events he reached a semi-final and a quarter-final, results that give him a solid platform in the race to qualify for the Players Championship Finals. Van Gerwen missed that tournament last year for the first time since its introduction in 2013. That is precisely why Van der Voort calls the current situation particularly unfortunate.

New setback at a sensitive moment

The uncertainty around his health could also impact a busy spell on the calendar. Alongside the Premier League night in Glasgow, the first Euro Tour event of the season is scheduled this coming weekend in Poland. Whether Van Gerwen will appear there is not yet clear. “Everything is uncertain for now,” Van der Voort noted.
The potential withdrawal comes just as Van Gerwen seemed to be regaining stability after a difficult 2025. Results were disappointing last year and, off the oche, he also went through a turbulent period, including his divorce from Daphne.
According to Van der Voort, that makes the current situation even more bitter. “Every time you think it’s turning the right way, something happens again.”
