Van Gerwen overcomes Anderson after leg-decider and keeps top four in sight

Michael van Gerwen claimed the win after an exciting match against Gary Anderson during the penultimate round of the Premier League Darts.

After previous victories by Nathan Aspinall and Peter Wright, The Dutchman had to win to keep a good chance of participating in the play-offs. Van Gerwen beat Anderson after a nervous last leg as he hit the double 20 with his last dart, after missing three matchdarts before.

The world number one had a good start and broke Anderson in the third leg with a 12-darter. A 15-darter then made it 3-1. The 31-year-old managed to break his Scottish rival again in leg seven with a 11-darter to lead 5-2. However Van Gerwen missed three darts for 6-2 and saw himself 6-5 down a couple legs later.

Van Gerwen kept his own leg to 6-6 and then again took the leg from Anderson to be allowed to throw for the match. The last leg did not go very smoothly despite a 180 score, but with an 18-darter the victory went 8-6 to the five-time Premier League champion.

Despite this victory, Mighty Mike is still fifth in the league standings. He does have as many points as Aspinall, but The Asp has a better leg difference (+5 versus + 2). Van Gerwen plays on the last round against Daryl Gurney, while Aspinall faces a tough match against leader Glen Durrant.
