The night concluded with
Michael Van Gerwen vs Daryl Gurney, the two Group A winners from the afternoon. Van Gerwen started strongly, breaking in the first leg with a double 19 finish and hitting six perfect darts in the second. “MVG” chased doubles around the board and finished the second leg on double 1. “Mighty Mike” continued to dominate, cruising 4-0 ahead as Gurney averaged around 80.
The Brighton crowd were excited at the prospect of a nine-darter when Van Gerwen hit six perfect darts again. There was no nine-darter but a 48 finish to go five clear. Gurney finally registered his first leg, breaking through to go 5-1 behind. “Superchin” gathered more momentum, breaking and then holding to reduce the deficit to a single leg. However, “MVG” reminded everyone why he is the world number one, firing in two 180s and a double 8 to go in 6-4 at the interval.
The Northern Irishman returned from the break with a resilient 110 finish. Van Gerwen retaliated with a ton plus finish of his own, firing in a 148 to go 7-5 up. Two comfortable legs on the spin put Van Gerwen a leg away from victory, finishing on 59 and 56 respectively.
Gurney held his throw and then broke to make it 9-7 after Van Gerwen missed a flurry of doubles. “Superchin” missed double 4 to stay alive in the match, allowing Van Gerwen to finish 68 and survive a nervy affair.
