Michael van Gerwen will face off against Mervyn King shortly in the final of the
Players Championship Finals as he aims to clinch glory for a sixth time in this tournament.
He saw off Gerwyn Price in an 11-8 win reeling off five consecutive legs with a spell prior to that seeing 'The Iceman' missing multiple darts to extend his lead and head towards the finishing line.
Price took the early lead doubling his lead with a 104
checkout to go 2-0 up and a 97 checkout and hold saw Price go 3-0 up with the
World Number One not having a single dart at double at that point.
Van Gerwen got off the mark with double five to reduce the deficit
to 3-1 down which proved to be pivotal as he headed into the interval 3-2
behind.
The Dutchman levelled up after the break but Price continued to lead.
But three missed darts at doubles saw Van Gerwen break and go ahead for the
first time at 5-4 up.
Price broke back though to leave it finely poised at 5-5.
When they returned, it was the tale of missed doubles at times for Price as he
went 8-6 up but failed to capitalise missing two darts at doubles to go 9-6 up
and it was locked at 8-7.
Price looked flat after missing those and returning from the
interval. Van Gerwen returned to take out 88 to make it 8-8 and from there
broke to make it 9-8 with a 177 and double eight.
He burst into a two-leg cushion to make it 10-8 and
concluded victory from there after Price missed another opportunity to close
the gap and double eight saw MVG through.
