Michael van Gerwen is no stranger to breaking a record or two at the oche. The darts maestro has now added a new Guinness World Records™ title to his long list of achievements after racking up the highest darts score ever thrown in one minute.
Three-time world champion Van Gerwen was challenged by William Hill ahead of the upcoming PDC World Darts Championship to write his name into the history books by breaking the record of 608 points, previously held by Leon Walraven, set in the Netherlands on 2nd March 2018.
Van Gerwen got off to a flier, notching a combined score of 77 in just five seconds from his first set of throws, before following that up with another 100 points, including a triple 20, from his second round. The Dutchman soon picked up another triple 20 en route to a combined score of 83 as we hit the 30-second mark, before landing a 180 from his fourth set of throws.
With just 15 seconds left on the clock, Van Gerwen racked up another 64 points from his fourth round, before squeezing in a final set of throws in the remaining five seconds, this time bagging another 140 points, including two triple 20s.
Van Gerwen’s final few throws at the death proved to be enough to carry him over the line as he tallied up a total of 644, beating the previous best by 36, to set a new Guinness World Records title for the highest darts score in one minute.
