Michael van Gerwen is through to his fifth
World Matchplay semi-final of his career as he looks to regain the Phil Taylor Trophy at the Winter Gardens.
This after a 16-9 victory over an out of sorts Nathan Aspinall who hit 9/36 on the doubles and a 90 average in defeat to 'The Green Machine' who will know he will need to step it up against Peter Wright in a mouthwatering clash next up.
The final four remain, will it be Van den Bergh or Ratajski or Van Gerwen or Wright who comes home with the trophy?
Aspinall wasn't on form early on and Van Gerwen took full advantage to surge into a 5-2 lead with a 96 average.
But Aspinall himself pounced on missed doubles from MVG to trail 5-3 with a break before taking out 130 on the bull to make it 5-4 and keep it interesting.
But a 68 checkout on double 20 stopped the Aspinall revival momentarily as MVG headed into the break 6-4 up.
This was followed by multiple breaks of throw exchanged between the duo with Aspinall unable to consolidate from 7-5 and as a result, Van Gerwen surged into an 8-5 lead and with 21 missed darts at doubles by 9-5, MVG pinned double one to extend his lead further.
The one way traffic continued with Van Gerwen went 11-5 up. Aspinall made it 11-6 but more costly misses at double allowed Van Gerwen to move 12-6 ahead.
A 15 darter made it 12-7 but the legs were running out as Van Gerwen surged further ahead at 13-7.
Aspinall was throwing left handed during the warmups and it seemed to work out as he claimed back-to-back legs to close the gap to 13-9.
He was looking good but again Van Gerwen popped up with a superb break with a 12-darter on double seven from 88 to deflate Aspinall again.
He held from there to go to the verge at 15-9 up and he completed the feat from there.
