Van Gerwen wins first major title in eighteen months and takes overall win in Premier League Darts

Michael van Gerwen has won the Premier League Darts for the sixth time in his career. Mighty Mike' prevailed in the final 11-10 against Joe Cullen, who in his debut year reached the final.

For Van Gerwen it is his first major title since his final victory at the Players Championship Finals in November 2020. In terms of the world ranking, however, the Dutchman gains nothing. The prize money in the Premier League Darts does not count towards the Order of Merit.

Just like in the semi-final against James Wade (10-4), Van Gerwen started the match a break behind. With a 70 finish and a 13-darter, the 33-year old from Brabander took the lead again.

He cashed in the break with a 14-darter. Cullen came back to 3-3, but Van Gerwen took the lead again in the seventh leg with a 12-darter. He then held his own legs with finishes of 74 and 88 to go into the break with a 6-4 lead.

Van Gerwen lost his break lead in the twelfth leg after he missed one chance on top. Cullen put the 6-6 on the scoreboard via double 18.

The Dutchman had to break Cullen again and he did in the nineteenth leg, but the Englishman broke back immediately. Cullen was then allowed to start the final leg, but missed a matchdart. Van Gerwen then hit double 14 for the title.
