Michael van Gerwen was dumped out at the second round stage to Simon Whitlock on Tuesday night at the World Matchplay as his wait for an elusive third title in the event continues.

Van Gerwen's streak of 15 consecutive wins over Whitlock was snapped; as well another interesting statistic came out of proceedings.

'Mighty Mike's average of 90.80 in the 11-4 defeat was the lowest he has hit in a ranked match on TV - double in at the World Grand Prix aside - for six-and-a-half years.

His lowest before that was at the start of his dominance; when he hit 89.13 against Zoran Lerchbacher back in 2013 at the PDC World Championship. This also means he has not hit any average below 90 for almost seven years in a ranked match on TV.
