On a number of occasions in the matchup, Wesley Plaisier seemed to have Peter Wright exactly where he wanted him on Tuesday night at the 2025 PDC World Darts Championship. Sadly for the Dutchman though, he couldn't take his chances, as 'Snakebite' took a much needed 3-1 victory.

"I had plenty of chances to make the score look different, especially in the second set I missed too many doubles," reflected Plaisier ruefully in his post-match press conference. "I also had a few chances in the last set. I knew beforehand that Peter could be beaten and it showed tonight. But then you have to throw your doubles."

The Dutchman averaged higher than his Scottish opponent, 93.77 to Wright's 89.63, but with just a 31% success rate on the outer ring, Plaisier failed to capitalise on the chances he'd forged for himself. "Of course I am disappointed with this defeat," he admits. "But certainly in scoring I showed what I am capable of. If you throw those doubles the world looks completely different. But this is another learning curve, at the important moments I had some tension."

"Peter also did what he had to do at the important moments," Plaisier adds, giving credit to the two-time world champion. "That's where you still notice the difference in experience with a player like me."

Despite this disappointment, Plaisier can look back on an excellent year that included a final at the WDF Dutch Open Darts, a win at the WDF World Masters and even a win on the PDC Pro Tour. "I do think this was my best year ever. I'm currently even in the top 64 in the world and that's without a PDC Tour Card," he assesses proudly. "I did capture that Tour Card for next year, so I hope I can hold that place in the top 64 until after this World Championship, then I get to keep that prize money for the world rankings. So I will certainly continue to follow the World Championship with a keen eye in the coming days and weeks," laughed Plaisier.
